Summer Games We’re On Our Way!

Today we competed in the KS2 Telford & Wrekin Archery Competition, which was held at The Wrekin College. This was a huge event with 20 schools competing to try to qualify for the Summer Games. There were two events our children had to participate in to score points for the team. One was shooting at a target and the other was shooting for distance, trying to land the arrow in hoops for double points. It was the first time the majority of our team had ever held a bow and arrow so to do as well as they did was tremendous. We finished 10th overall with 161 points but finished second in the Burton Borough competition, which means we have qualified for the summer games in July!

Well done team this is a fantastic achievement!

Year 5/6 Girls vs. Old Park

For the second time this week, our Year 5/6 girls’ football team were in action again, this time in an away friendly fixture against Old Park Primary. This was chance for a few of the other girls in our squad to play in a game, as we are all so eager here at Hollinswood! This match was a very tight and cagey encounter with both teams defending well limiting chances on goal. Our first big chance came from a goal kick, which put Alicia through one on one with the Old Park keeper, but she blazed it over the bar! At half time, the scores were 0-0 but as we started the second and our quality of play started to shine through on a very dull and cold evening, our girls could sense we could get something out of the game. Paris broke through in midfield and slid a ball through to Isabelle who then finished by chipping the Old Park goalkeeper from a tight angle – what a goal! The second goal came very soon after and again it was Isabelle who doubled our lead to make it 2-0. Old Park pulled one back but our defence held firm with some great defending from Christabel and Rihanna and the game finished 2-1.

Well done girls, great spectacle for the fans watching!

Year 5/6 Girls vs. Grange Park

In our first fixture of 2018, our Year 5/6 girls’ football team took on Grange Park in a home friendly fixture. The match started at an electrifying pace with both teams having half chances to break the deadlock. The first real chance came to Grange Park as their striker went through on goal but Lily pulled off a great save to keep the score at 0-0. After this chance, our dominance began to show and we went into half time with a 3-0 lead thanks to a Georgina hat trick. We continued our attacking football throughout the second half and finished the game as 7-1 winners, thanks to two more goals for Georgina, one for Gods Favour and the final by Demi.

The improvements our girls are making each game are amazing, well done to you all!

Year 3/4 Gymnastics Competition

This afternoon our Year 3&4 Gymnastics team travelled to Wrekin College to compete in the Telford & Wrekin Gymnastics competition. This year it was bigger than ever and included over 20 other schools, all trying to be the best! Individual had to perform a floor routine and a vault routine, which were both scored out of 10, our scores were then added together and that was our final total. Overall, we finished in 7th place, which is a fantastic achievement that I know all of our gymnasts are proud of and of course, they had lots of fun representing our school.

Well done team, you were awesome!

Year 5/6 NAK Competition

Today we entered our second New Age Kurling Competition of the year but this time at The Wrekin College along with 49 other schools! This is the largest NAK competition that Telford & Wrekin have ever hosted and all participants were very excited to see how they would match up against the opposition. We were drawn into Group 9 along with two of our local rivals Windmill and Grange Park, but also thrown in were Tibberton and Sir Alexander Fleming. The standard from all teams in Group 9 was very high and we ended up losing three matches and winning one. Our team can be proud of their performances, as it was the first time that they have ever played but it was great to see their desire to improve as players – which I can 100% say they all did!

Year 3/4 Kwik Cricket

This afternoon our Year 3/4 cricket team went to Telford Tennis Centre to compete in the Telford and Wrekin Kwik Cricket tournament. Like all Telford and Wrekin competitions, this one was packed full of children from different schools all competing against each other trying to be win top spot! We were drawn into a group with Old Park, Apley Wood and St. Peter’s & St. Pauls. Our first two games against Old Park and Apley Wood ended in a narrow loss but as we grew in confidence, we beat St. Peter’s & St. Pauls convincingly. In the next stage of the competition we were drew against Coalbrookdale and again continued our fine batting form to take the victory and progress into the quarter-finals against Wrockwardine Wood. This again was a very close encounter but Wrockwadine Wood won by a mere 4 points! Our team can be very proud of their excellent batting and fielding skills and the manner in which they conducted themselves throughout the tournament.

KS2 Boccia

Today we took our KS2 Boccia team to the Telford Tennis Centre to compete in the Telford & Wrekin Boccia Tournament. We were drawn into Group 8 along with Meadows, Dawley, Dothill and Windmill. Our first game saw us come up against Dothill, it was a very close game but Dothill took the 2-1 victory. We were victorious against Windmill winning 2-1 and Meadows, which was also 2-1 but we finished our last game drawing with Dawley 2-2. Our two victories, one draw and one loss meant we finished 2nd in Group 8, missing out on qualifying for the semi-finals by 1 point! Our team can be proud of their achievements today as they performed brilliant and grew in confidence as the tournament progressed.

The Final Battle!

Today was our last football match of the series with Old Park. This was a home fixture and was the turn of our Year 3/4 boys’ team. We started the game very brightly after some loving interchanging play down the right side of the pitch from Alfie and Kane but the Old Park defence were up to the challenge and kept us at bay. Old Park then began to find their feet and scored some very well worked goals, which our team could not do much about. Kane pulled two goals back, one being a tidy finish into the bottom corner of the goal and the other being a sublime free kick from the edge of the area, into the top corner. Alfie also scored a goal but the score finished 12-3 to a very strong Old Park side. Despite the score line our team can hold their heads high as they gave 100% throughout and played some very good football.

Well done team!

The Duels With Old Park Continue!

Today saw the rest of our Year 5/6 boys participate in another thrilling football match against Old Park at their school. Although the pitch is very small, we handled this brilliantly and managed to move the ball around the park magnificently. With the first phase of play in the match, we put together a fluent move, which consisted of 10 passes, and it resulted in Maks tucking the ball into the Old Park goal from a tight angle to make it 1-0. We continued our fierce start throughout the game and went into half time with a resounding 4-0 lead thanks to Maks completing his hat trick and Gideon getting on the scoresheet. In the second half, we continued our dominating performance and went 7-0 up with Gideon doubling his goal tally and Brad also scoring two, but this was when Old Park began to make a comeback and scored two goals – one of them being an own goal from Brad after a sliced clearance! Brad made up for his error in the dying seconds of the match and completed his hat trick with a great strike, which flew into the top corner of the goal. This team has developed so much over the past few months and were delighted with their 8-2 victory.

Well done boys, magnificent display!

Year 5/6 Central Football League

To finish off our very busy day of sport at Hollinswood, our Year 5/6 boys’ football team had to play their Telford & Wrekin Central Football League fixture against Coalbrookdale, in the round of the last 16. We got off to a nightmare start as Coalbrookdale took the lead within the first two minutes of the game after miscommunication in defence. This gave us the wakeup call we needed and we equalised after a great through ball from Harvey put Abdullah through on goal and he took his chance to make it 1-1. Just before half time, although we had the majority of the play, Coalbrookdale again took the lead as their striker slotted into the bottom corner of our goal after being in a one on one situation with our goalkeeper. Harvey equalised for us with a tidy finish, with literally the last kick of the half, after great work down the right flank from Rio to make it 2-2. In the second half, our boys continued to dominate but could not beat the Coalbrookdale goalkeeper who made several great saves to keep them in the game. Inside the last minute of the match, fortune was on Coalbrookdale’s side as their number 6 struck the ball from range in hope and it looped over Callum to give them a 3-2 lead and win the match. Our team were bemused after putting in a good display but still losing the match, but this is the life of a footballer – not everything goes your way in games!

Keep your heads up boys; you can be proud of your achievements of being one of the last 16 schools in the whole of Telford & Wrekin!

Mr Griffiths.
